Spiritual Practice Made Simple

In conversations I have with clients and friends, there is a common theme around “spiritual practice.” I find a lot of people feeling like this is some kind of homework, or that if they aren’t meditating for 30 minutes a day, or chanting mantras, they are doing it wrong. It starts to feel overwhelming.

Here’s the thing: you cannot get it wrong. It’s not homework, and no one is judging you. You do not have to have a regular practice – you may want to begin one, and feel overwhelmed, even too overwhelmed to begin. Pro tip: start where you are.

It’s about making time for yourself, to quiet your mind, to allow all the cool stuff to find you faster. You do not have to partake in any special rituals, or dance naked under the moon. You can begin right where you are, and start off simple and small.

Ground yourself. Then focus on your breathing for a few moments. Allow your thoughts to leave. Don’t think about anything. There you go – in 3 minutes, you’ve just “spiritually practiced.” Does that sound hard? Heavy? Too time consuming? Nope, it’s simple.

Repeat that practice anytime you have a few minutes in your day. You’ll relieve stress, clear your head, and get back to self. Without any heavy lifting.

Ready for something a little more substantial? Add an element. Speak aloud 3 things you are grateful for, and say the reasons why you’re grateful.

More? Invite the Universe to delight and amaze you today. Yes, simply state your expectation aloud.

That’s a whopping 6 to 10 minutes of Spiritual Practice. Tell me you can’t spare 6 to 10 minutes a day to get into the habit of communing with the Universe. I bet you can.

Walk in the woods. Pet your cat. Enjoy a hot cup of tea under your favorite blanket. Shut off that smart phone.

And, yes, spiritual practice can be that simple. It can also be more involved, and you can add to your practice, vary it up, get as serious about it as you want to. But my point is – you really can, and do have time to start connecting with your spiritual self. Start where you are, and keep it simple, until you feel inspired to go deeper.

Let me know if I can help you on your path!
